In My Daughters' Eyes

My wife passed away February 5, 2005 after a long, hard-fought battle with colon cancer which eventually metastasized to her lungs. It was a 3 1/2 year battle. Upon her passing, we were asked to donate her corneas. We all knew she would have been first in line to help someone if she could. Today, we received a letter from the Midwest Eye-Banks explaining that a man and a woman had both benefited from her donation. The whole family was informed within 10 minutes. I'm sure many tears of joy were shed this afternoon.

Ronette was a beautiful young woman with blue eyes, which she was very proud of. Ronette and I would have been married 11 years this March. She was just 31. We shared a dream of raising 12 children; unfortunately, her illness terminated our dream. There is a song that was one of her favorites - In My Daughter's Eyes by Martina McBride. You see, in this song, she speaks of seeing herself in her daughter's eyes. Ronette and I were blessed with three of the most precious little girls in the world. They were her whole life until the very end. They are only 4, 6 and 8 years old, but they learned a lot from their mommy.

The girls and I all have my mother's brown eyes - Ronette had hoped one day for a blue-eyed baby. As the song I referred to progresses, it tells us how Ronette will be there in her daughters' eyes. The most important thing is that those are my "brown eyes" and it only makes sense that the girls should show her memory in their eyes. Ronette and I will always be together in their eyes, just as it has always been!

For now, we mourn her loss and take comfort in the fact that she has helped someone, even in her passing. I know the whole family would welcome any contact from the beneficiaries of her donation... Especially Ronette's mother, who is an RN and spent the last 3 1/2 years literally by her side through the whole illness.

This donation has brought us all great comfort. Thank you from Ronette, and all of us, for the opportunity to help!
